What did Americans think of Trump’s address? 12:30 Report | 30 minutes ago

Trump’s speech highlighted his vision of hope versus Democrats’ despair and decline

There were two Americas on display at Tuesday night’s State of the Union Address. The one presented by President Trump exemplified courage, hope, pride in our nation, and aspiration for a better future. The Democrats presented a contrasting vision of darkness, despair, envy, anger, and resentment toward their fellow Americans.

It’s natural for an incumbent president to sing America’s praises during the State of the Union. What was once simply a formal constitutional duty for the chief executive to report to Congress has become a pep rally for the sitting administration, with presidents of both parties over the last half century highlighting their accomplishments and setting out a vision for the remainder of their terms.

What is not natural, however, is for the opposing party to react to exultations of American greatness with such visible disapproval. When President Trump asked legislators to stand if they agreed that the purpose of the American government is to protect American citizens, not illegal aliens, Democrats remained seated.

As Trump went on, highlighting families in the gallery who had been victimized by illegal aliens’ criminal violence or reckless driving, very few of the Democrats present could bring themselves to show any empathy.

Trump honored the U.S. men’s hockey team for its stunning gold medal win in the Winter Olympics. Not all the Democrats would stand even for them — and in fact, their allies in the media excoriated the team both for accepting Trump’s invitation to attend the address and for daring to laugh at his jokes.

Trump even took the opportunity to award two Medals of Honor — one to a 100-year-old veteran of World War II, the Korean War, and Vietnam, and the other to an Army pilot wounded in the raid to capture Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro. One Democratic lawmaker mocked the awards during a concurrent livestream — “It was like an award show. You get a medal, you get a medal, you get a medal” — as Democrats in the chamber spent much of the speech shouting Trump down with angry epithets.

Like President Ronald Reagan, Trump epitomizes the archetype of the happy warrior. Following a campaign in which he was indicted in four separate criminal cases, arrested, sued and even shot in the head, Trump can now stand before the American people and say that America is better than ever and that the best is yet to come.

In contrast, Democrats, unable to achieve their goal of making Trump die in prison, are angrier and more unhinged than ever.

Such anger is dangerous and contagious. Reps. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) and Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) may satisfy themselves by shouting at Trump during the State of the Union address, but many of their followers lack even that level of self-control.

Last week in Meridian, Idaho — just west of Boise — a middle-aged woman named Sarah George allegedly stole an ambulance, crashed it into a building where ICE was about to lease office space, and began pouring gasoline in and around the vehicle, intending to set the building on fire. Fortunately, Meridian police responded before she could finish the job. She fled into the night but was easily apprehended.

On Facebook, Sarah continued doing what she had long done — constantly posting anti-ICE and anti-Trump messages. Law enforcement tracked her down after discovering that she had purchased the gasoline cans at a nearby Walmart and filled them at a local Fred Meyer gas station using her own rewards card.

George is obviously no master criminal, nor are those like her. But these people are still dangerous. They consume a constant stream of angry rhetoric from Democrats and the media, amplified by algorithms designed to intensify strong emotions. Eventually, some of them snap. In that sense, there is a line connecting the reaction of the left to Trump’s speech and a disturbed Idaho woman trying to destroy a 252,000-square-foot office building in a suburban office park.

Whatever happened to the days when Reagan and House Speaker Tip O’Neill (D-Mass.) could disagree over tax rates and fight bitterly over health care, government regulations, and monetary policy, yet still share an appreciation for their nation’s greatness? Are those days gone for good? Or can the Democratic Party step back from the brink?

On Tuesday night, we saw two competing visions of America. One extolled the good and the beautiful, honoring heroism and self-sacrifice while inspiring greatness in all Americans. The other wallowed in victimhood, using envy and anger to stir up those who believe they have nothing left to lose. One vision was rooted in hope; the other in despair.

In his speech, Trump celebrated America and laid out a vision to make it even greater. It is not too late for Democrats to set aside their anger and work together to build a safe and prosperous future for all Americans.
