NJ Transit announces $150 World Cup train tickets: ‘We are not making profits’

NEW JERSEY (WPIX) – As the 2026 World Cup approaches, there is growing controversy in the greater New York-New Jersey area over the high train ticket prices to MetLife Stadium.

Gov. Mikie Sherrill (D) requested that FIFA cover the transportation costs for the thousands of fans visiting the tri-state area; however, FIFA has argued it has never encountered this issue in any city where the World Cup has been held.

On Friday afternoon, NJ Transit announced that a round-trip train ticket will cost $150, a significant increase from the normal day-to-day price, which is $12.90.

“I’m actually struggling to understand why you need to raise prices,” one person said in a Reddit post after the news broke. “I get it if we were building a new train route and you want to recoup money from that.”

NJ Transit will sell 40,000 tickets for each match, covering an estimated 51 percent of attendees.

Digital transit tickets will go on sale on May 13 and will be available on NJ Transit’s mobile app. The tickets will not be refundable or transferable. Tickets will not be available at station offices or vending machines.
