Trump’s Donroe Doctrine is bringing Israel closer to Latin America

In an unprecedented development, Latin American countries are declaring their full support for Israel, restoring relations, and strengthening cooperation in security and trade. The list ranges from long-standing allies like Argentina to staunch adversaries like Venezuela. This new context presents a golden opportunity to establish solid relationships beyond the political momentum created by the new Monroe Doctrine. 

Last week, Venezuela and Israel agreed to re-establish consular relations, after a 17-year hiatus during which all diplomatic ties had been severed. Venezuela had previously been Iran’s primary ally in South America. Since the removal of accused narco-trafficker Nicolas Maduro, things have started to change. Highly enriched uranium has been removed, a Hezbollah terrorist has been captured and the Israel Defense Forces arrived in Venezuela to provide assistance after last June’s twin earthquakes.

In Bolivia, following the end of twenty years of socialist rule, the new government has re-established diplomatic relations with Israel, cancelled a military cooperation agreement with Iran, and suspended exchanges regarding border security as well as the supply of drones. Bolivia also withdrew from the genocide lawsuit in the International Court of Justice against Israel and eliminated the visa requirement for Israeli citizens.
