UN issues warning on impending ‘super’ El Niño

(NEXSTAR) – Brace yourselves for the arrival of El Niño, the United Nation’s meteorological wing is warning.

The arrival of El Niño appears to be imminent. The climate phenomenon is favored to take over between now and July, and chances are growing that we’ll see a “super,” or very strong, El Niño.

“The science is clear: El Niño is arriving on our doorstep in the coming months with 90% certainty. The world must treat it as the urgent climate warning it is,” said UN Secretary-General António Guterres in a video on Tuesday.

A strong El Niño would super-charge the types of weather events that are already worsening due to climate change, the UN’s World Meteorological Wing said.

“We need to prepare for a potentially strong El Niño event — which will exacerbate drought and heavy rainfall and increase the risk of heatwaves both on land and in the ocean,” said Secretary-General Celeste Saulo.
