What are the ‘Freedom Trucks’ touring the US, and where are they heading next?
(NEXSTAR) – Several events and celebrations are expected to take place this year in honor of America’s semiquincentennial, including a UFC match on the White House lawn and an IndyCar race through Washington, D.C.
The same group behind those events is also responsible for a fleet of “Freedom Trucks” that are now touring the U.S.
The six “Mobile Museums” feature an exhibit that recounts “how 13 colonies declared independence, defeated the greatest empire in the world, and secured American sovereignty 250 years ago,” according to Freedom 250. They also “highlight the great people, events and places associated with the Revolution and formational years of our nation,” Keith E. Sonderling, deputy secretary of Labor and acting director of the Institute of Museum and Library Services, wrote in an opinion piece for Nexstar’s The Hill earlier this year.
PragerU, an Oklahoma-based conservative educational platform, and Hillsdale College, a Michigan-based Christian liberal arts college, partnered to create the Freedom Trucks. They were “made possible” by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, an agency established by the federal government.
Last year, the IMLS said the Freedom Trucks were inspired by the Freedom Train. In 1947 and the mid-1970s, traincars full of documents, artifacts, and more related to the nation’s history traveled the country for Americans to tour. The first reached all 48 states (Alaska and Hawaii hadn’t gained statehood yet) and more than 300 cities, not too unlike another coast-to-coast tour a massive locomotive is gearing up to embark on.

Unlike the Freedom Trains, the Freedom Trucks include digital interactives, a “Wall of American Heroes” (many of whom were among the more than 200 figures Trump previously described as “American heroes”), and a space to virtually add your signature to the Declaration of Independence.
They also display quotes from Trump and a video of him in the Oval Office, according to The New York Times.
The Freedom Trucks were most recently on display at the Florida State Fair in Tampa and at the NRB International Christian Media Convention in Nashville.
