Target to open its 2,000th store, with more on the way: Here’s where

(NEXSTAR) – It’s been more than 60 years since Target opened its first store in Minnesota. Later this month, the retailer will achieve a major milestone with the opening of its 2,000th store – but it doesn’t stop there.

This year alone, Target says it expects to open more than 30 new stores as it moves toward having over 300 new stores by 2035.

“Guests tell us all the time they want a Target closer to home, and this investment helps us do exactly that,” Adrienne Costanzo, the chief stores officer for Target, said in a Thursday news release. The company already claims that it has a store within 10 miles of most U.S. doorsteps.

Seven new stores are on track to open this month, including Target’s 2,000th store in Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina. According to Target, this location “represents the future” of its stores, “with its open, easily navigable layout, convenient same-day services and winning team delivering a more relaxed and enjoyable shopping visit.”

Some Target shoppers told CNBC last year that they had started going elsewhere because of untidy stores, unappealing items, or the company’s scaling back of its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. According to CNBC, Target has acknowledged that the latter had an impact on sales.

Now, the retailer has its sights set on growing.

In addition to the store in Fuquay-Varina, Target will open new locations in Bakersfield and Delano, California; Springfield, Missouri; and Oak Cliff, Texas; on March 15. On March 29, two additional stores will open in Jersey City and West Orange, New Jersey.

Target lists more than 40 more communities that will, at some point, see a store open. A representative previously confirmed to Nexstar that the list serves as a roundup of future store sites but not a “comprehensive view of every store in our broader pipeline.” The locations can further have various timelines.

Details for each are released closer to that specific opening date, the company said.

Based on the future store openings Target has confirmed, the states expected to see the most growth are Florida (4 stores), North Carolina (4), and Texas (5).

More than 40 communities across 25 states are on track to get a new Target store in the future. In addition to the stores opening in March, here’s where Target is on track to expand:

Arizona: Buckeye, Casa Grande, and East Mesa

Colorado: Denver and Firestone

Florida: Clearwater, Fort Lauderdale, Lake Nona, and Winter Haven

Idaho: Chubbuck and Meridian

Illinois: Round Lake Beach

Louisiana: Denham Springs

Massachusetts: Springfield

Missouri: University City

New York: Bridgehampton

North Carolina: Fayetteville, Mebane, Myrtle Grove, and Selma

North Dakota: Fargo and Williston

Pennsylvania: Hermitage

South Carolina: Lexington, Newport, and Seneca

South Dakota: Brookings

Tennessee: Gallatin, Lebanon, and Millington

Texas: Dripping Springs, Forney, Fort Worth, Katy, and Little Elm

Utah: Herriman, Lehi, and Logan

Wisconsin: Brown Deer

Job postings show hiring is underway for the stores in University City, Myrtle Grove, Selma, Buckeye, and Casa Grande – they’re all listed as opening this spring.

For most communities, the new Target store will anchor a new or growing development. Local reporting shows that’s the case in Casa Grande, Meridian, Fayetteville, Covington, Davison, Buckeye, Lake Nona, Frankfort, Springfield, Hermitage, Williston, Winter Haven, Tupelo, Myrtle Grove, Denham Springs, and Lexington.

Other reports show stores in East Mesa, Perris, Denver (which was one of the first places Target ever expanded to), Firestone, University City, Selma, Newport, Seneca, Brookings, Katy, Little Elm, and Brown Deer could open in their respective development projects next year.

In other communities, Target is replacing former retail spaces, like an old Sears in Clearwater, a theater and office retailer in Fort Lauderdale, a shuttered Macy’s in Lima, vacant Kmart stores in Bridgehampton and Round Lake Beach, an old mall in Logan, and a mall under redevelopment in Chubbuck. In Norfolk, Target will take over a former Kroger store.

Some of these communities (or at least their neighbors) will also see Buc-ee’s locations open their doors in the coming years, potentially giving you the chance to snag some Beaver Nuggets while out on your Target run.
