OTTAWA—Gordie Howe must be turning over in his grave. The political football attached to the bridge bearing the legendary hockey player’s name has made a laughing stock of signed agreements. 

It seems the president of the United States has the power to unilaterally shut down bridges and revoke red cards in international sporting events. 

And no one in his party appears ready to challenge him.

Just look at the trajectory of the American senator felled last week by an aortic dissection.

In the eulogies following Lindsey Graham’s death, we were reminded that he was best friends with John McCain in the early days of his political career. 

When McCain passed, Graham said, “America and Freedom have lost one of her greatest champions, and I have lost one of my dearest friends and mentors. I will need some time to absorb this, but I want Cindy and the entire McCain family to know they are in our prayers.”

His support for McCain ran counter to the view expressed by U.S. President Donald Trump who constantly attacked McCain’s record as a renowned prisoner of war. 

Graham characterized Trump as “unfit for office” after the president said, “I like people who aren’t captured.”
