The Middle East is once again at the precipice of a catastrophic escalation of conflict, with the Red Sea becoming the focal point of the expanding crisis.

The Iran-backed Houthi group declared a maritime blockade against Saudi Arabia on Monday, threatening to target any vessel calling at Saudi ports. This declaration was swiftly followed by attacks on two Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea.

These actions have highlighted the strategic importance of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a critical waterway connecting the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden. Control of this strait is vital for global trade as millions of barrels of oil pass through it daily.

The Houthi blockade, alongside Iran’s strategic pressure on the Strait of Hormuz, creates a dual choke hold on energy transport. Any sustained disruption to maritime traffic in this region could have a cascading effect on the world economy, affecting not only energy prices but also the cost of goods and services globally.
