Every year on 06 September, Pakistan proudly observes Defence Day, a day deeply etched in the nation’s collective memory as a symbol of unwavering courage, sacrifice and national unity against unprovoked aggression. On the pivotal day of 06 September, as the war escalated between Pakistan and India, the skies above Pakistan transformed into the crucible for a historic aerial confrontation. Armed with advanced fighter jets like F-86 Sabre and Mach-2 F-104 Starfighter, PAF orchestrated a blistering series of combat air patrols, strategic airfield strikes and relentless close air support missions. This campaign showcased not only the technical prowess of PAF’s pilots but also their indomitable spirit.

The legendary Squadron Leader Muhammad Mahmood Alam's extraordinary feat—downing five enemy aircraft in a single sortie—etched a permanent mark in the annals of aerial warfare and exemplified the courage and tactical brilliance that defined PAF’s contribution to the conflict. PAF’s mission in 1965 went beyond winning air superiority; it was about forging an impervious shield, one that crippled enemy air operations at Bases such as Pathankot and thwarted armoured thrusts at Bambawali Ravi-Bedian Canal.
