Tasmania's Macquarie Point build faces a race against time and workers

Tasmania's Macquarie Point precinct is now more than just a sporting debate-it has become a test of political will, economic ambition, and practical reality.

The Rockliff government is pushing enabling legislation through Parliament despite an EMRS poll from February 2025 showing that 59.9 per cent of Tasmanians oppose the project. The Premier has staked his leadership on the $945 million venue that remains controversial, even as momentum builds.

Supporters, led by the Civil Contractors Federation Tasmania (CCFTas), argue the stadium is a "once-in-a-generation" catalyst for jobs and growth. CCFTas CEO Andrew Winch says the project will create 588 direct construction jobs and hundreds more through associated infrastructure, tourism, and hospitality. Statewide, business groups and tourism advocates view the Macquarie Point precinct as an opportunity to retain skilled workers in Tasmania and attract visitors for years to come.
