California Neighborhood Raises Red Flags Over Childhood Cancer and Chemicals

A small corner of south Orange County, California, has drawn national attention after reports of multiple cases of a rare childhood cancer. Residents say the worries go beyond one diagnosis and point to a broader set of possible environmental factors in the community.

At least six children from Ladera Ranch have been diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma, a rare cancer that primarily affects bones and soft tissue. With only about 200 to 240 cases being reported nationwide each year, the issue gained wider notice after the mother of 17-year-old Brody Matteson spoke publicly about her son’s death in March.
