The AI revolution has finally come for college football recruiting.

Apparently, lesser men are using AI to create fake highlight clips to send to college recruiters.

Check out this video:

These seem as real as the sky is blue, yet they are apparently generated by AI.

First of all, anyone who would create a fake highlight reel to impress recruiters and win an athletic scholarship should be sent to a metaphorical gulag. You should be banned from college sports for life, or be forced to compete on your school’s cross-country team. If you are a football player, you should be forced to be a male cheerleader.

This AI development is also a little freaky and shows how far AI has come in a matter of years. I still remember that the first AI videos were totally unrealistic. It was pure slop. AI stuff is still slop, but the slop is closer to reality. Weird.

But there’s good news. There’s a very easy fix to this problem.

Yep, just good ol’ fashioned human beings.

In this case, scouts.

So in the short term, while this may be a wild disruption to the college sports recruiting process, the easier way to fix it in the long term is to just deploy human scouts.

Also, this story got me thinking about the movie Moneyball, about the Oakland A’s, the data revolution in baseball, and how it wiped out a bunch of old-school MLB scouts who didn’t rely on data and statistics. They relied on heuristics, little nuggets of wisdom, little practical cheat codes, wisdom passed down from other scouts, like whether a player had an attractive girlfriend. One of the scouts from the movie remarked that if a player didn’t have an attractive girlfriend, it showed that he didn’t have confidence. He wouldn’t be a good player in the pros.

These guys seemed like retrograde dinosaurs, but maybe they were on to something.
