Here Are 4 Reasons Why Trump’s Meeting With Comrade Mamdani Was Politically Brilliant
President Donald Trump and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani met in the Oval Office for the second time Thursday.
Mamdani “came to the president today with a couple of pitches that would produce and construct more housing in a handful of projects than has happened in 50 years,” Anna Bahr, a spokeswoman for City Hall, said according to the New York Times. He and Trump later discussed a New Yorker with ties to Columbia University who was recently detained by ICE. That individual, Elmina Aghayeva, was released after the meeting. Trump got a fantastic photo-op, with two New York Daily News front pages. One fabricated front page featured Trump, with the headline, “Trump to City: Let’s Build”, and sub-headlines, “Backs New Era of Housing” and “Trump Delivers 12,000+ Homes; Most Since 1973.” The other was a 1975 front page with the former President Gerald Ford, who had famously refused to bail out the city when it was on the verge of bankruptcy.

This isn’t an understatement: this meeting was a politically brilliant move on Trump’s part.
First, it shows a softer side of Trump that often gets buried in the media — he is a loyal son of the great city of New York, and he cares deeply for it, partisan politics aside.
Second, it makes Mamdani look weak. He had to come “kiss the ring,” as they say, and ask Trump for help in getting Aghayeva released. He probably also discussed federal funding for city housing because he can’t build more without it.
Third, independents will look at this meeting and begin to question whether Trump is really the fascist that the media makes him out to be. He’s compromising with a man who is on the opposite side of the political spectrum. He wants to build more homes, suggesting that he still cares about the affordability crisis. And he is willing to soften up on the immigration crackdown, as recent polling shows that a majority of Americans think the administration has gone too far with methods too harsh.
And lastly, many leftist Mamdani supporters are going to have a conniption over their mayor sharing a friendly, productive meeting with Trump. Such supporters might be a small minority in his overall coalition, but they are very vocal and uncompromising. This meeting, or future meetings with Trump, could potentially turn into a political headache for Mamdani. Overall, the meeting leaves one with the impression that Trump can still compromise on big political issues and that he still has a friendly, charming side, a side of him that deeply appeals to independents.
It’s part of the reason why so many swing voters were captivated by him in 2016. He was a billionaire who spoke the language of the common man. A New York real estate mogul who ate McDonald’s and drank Diet Coke. He was practical, not ideological or too right-wing, someone who was willing to compromise to fix things. Trump should show more of this side as the midterm elections approach.
