Gov. Gavin Newsom admitted the bitter truth about assisted suicide after watching his mother kill herself, in an interview published Wednesday.

In 2002, Newsom’s mother, Tessa, was dying of cancer. She called her son, leaving a voicemail. If he wanted to see her one more time, he would have to visit within the week because she was planning on committing assisted suicide, The Washington Post reported.

At the time, Newsom was 34 years old. He was trying to climb the political ladder in California. He felt immense guilt for not finding the time to visit his mom, who had metastatic breast cancer, WaPo reported. (RELATED: Delaware Legalizes Assisted Suicide)
