To impeach, or not to impeach? That is the question top Democrats will be asking themselves as the midterm elections fast approach.

Democratic lawmakers have begun to consider whether to pursue impeachment, investigations against President Trump and his family, investigations into corporate mergers, or put oversight on the back burner and focus on delivering policy wins for their constituents, if they retake the House in November. Cracks are already forming, though, and, by so openly floating impeachment, they might bite off more than they can chew. (RELATED: Chris Cuomo Implores Democrats To Resist Impeaching Trump)

“There’s opportunities to look at not just corporations that we think are enabling some of Trump’s corruption, but certainly corporations that are not supporting American families and not really focusing on affordability,” Democratic California Rep. Robert Garcia, the Oversight panel’s top Democrat, told Semafor.

Democratic Maryland Rep. Jamie Raskin, the top Judiciary Committee Democrat, said he is interested in investigating whether Trump has violated the Emoluments Clause of the Constitution, which prevents the president from receiving “gifts” from foreign countries or American taxpayers.

“The cardinal, original sin of Trump was to decide that he was going to use the presidency as a profit-making enterprise in his first term, and I would say that Congress should have impeached him for receiving millions and millions of dollars from foreign governments,” Raskin told the outlet.

Some Democrats, however, seem more keen on investigating corporate mergers and potential monopolies, such as the merger between Hewlett-Packard and Juniper Networks, than potentially impeachable offenses. As Semafor noted, they would likely not have enough votes in the Senate to convict Trump.

Democratic Arizona Sen. Ruben Gallego told Semafor, “Once we take power, whoever the president is, we’re going to break up your companies. So all the investment you did to create these mergers are going to be for naught. Your investors are going to be pissed at you, and you’re likely going to end up getting fired as the CEO because you wasted so much money and corrupted yourself in the process.”

Yet another Democratic faction appears more concerned about delivering wins for the American people and lowering the cost of living than notching political victories against the Trump administration.

“We have to do oversight and accountability, and we have to talk about the affordability agenda, how we’re going to make life better for people if we are given the opportunity to lead, and if we’re given the opportunity to govern,” Democratic California Rep. Pete Aguilar, the third-ranking House Democrat, told Semafor.

Aguilar can already see a dilemma taking shape. Impeachments and investigations cost time and money, and if Democrats such as Raskin oversell the idea of a Trump impeachment, their base will grow more and more impatient. They will want “accountability,” but will get none, because Democrats will likely not have the Senate votes to convict.

Meanwhile, all the independents, who presumably vote for Democrats in the midterms because they want more done to address the affordability crisis, will watch from the sidelines as impeachment hearings and investigations devolve into a fruitless clown show. Forget about fixing the healthcare system; Democrats will burn through all their political capital to attack Trump and his cabinet just so they can appear as “fighters” to their base.

And where will that leave the party as a whole? In no better position than they were at the end of Joe Biden’s presidency. It will leave them in shambles.
