Well, This Explains A Lot About Why Team USA Baseball Let Us Down After All The Hype

With baseball being the sport that it is, you can have all the talent in the world and still take a loss in a tournament like the World Baseball Classic, just ask Team USA who took a big fat L to Italy in a shocking upset. But it’s not just that they lost, it was also the embarrassing lead-up to the defeat.

Because, get this, we were apparently in the quarterfinals without actually being in the quarterfinals … huh?

A spot in the round was up for grabs in the game between the Americans and Italians, with the former ultimately failing in a comeback attempt to allow the pasta-eaters to win. Center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong did his thing with two homeruns in the game, but other than that, it was a disaster in a 8-6 loss. As a result, all three nations of the United States, Italy and Mexico remain in the hunt for their pool’s two quarterfinal spots, and it will all be decided Wednesday night in the contest between the Italians and Mexicans. If Italy is victorious, they and the Americans advance. If Mexico gets the dub, then they will be the ones moving on, with the other spot coming down to a USA-Italy tiebreaker. If Italy allows five or more runs, the United States gets in. If it’s under five, Italy lands the spot.

The Americans gave themselves a little bit of leverage thanks to their six runs, but you know what they say, a loss is a loss. And with them being on the opposite side of a win, they no longer control their destiny.

Not if you question Team USA manager Mark DeRosa about it, who straight up thinks that we’re in the quarterfinals already. Except, we’re not, and we’re on the verge of being eliminated from the tournament altogether.

Just check out this embarrassment:
