MARTEL MAXWELL: Level of discontent among Tayside’s brilliant police officers is a disgrace

Could you be a police officer? I couldn’t.

Often the first to arrive at scenes of unimaginable horror – from fatal motorway accidents to reports of child abuse, from stabbings to overdoses – those on the frontline live with those images for the rest of their lives.

For every emergency service worker, there will be highs, times when they saved lives and made a real difference.

But the lows can leave scars not seen, that take resilience to live with and through.

The least – yet most important thing – a job like that requires? A strong foundation of bosses who care, who use their experience to lead, listen, help and guide.

Police bullying and staff shortages

Horrifying then, to read The Courier’s revelation of bullying, staff shortages and unmanageable workloads in a scathing survey by police officers in Tayside.

More than 320 officers and 11 staff members in D Division (serving Dundee City, Perth and Kinross, and Angus) were asked for their views in October.

At this point in the story, I saw some cause for hope, for at least a survey had been issued, completed and published.
