Liberal housing spokesman Andrew Bragg has nominated about 180,000 as the size of Net Overseas Migration under a Coalition government.

The number is based on Opposition Leader Angus Taylor’s earlier announced policy of using the number of homes built in the previous year as the ceiling for the NOM.

The current level of dwelling constructions is about 173,000-180,000 annually. From March 2025 to March 2026, more than 174,000 dwellings were completed.

The actual number for the NOM that the opposition will take to the 2028 election will be based on the updated construction numbers closer to the poll.

Bragg, shadow minister for the environment as well as for housing and homelessness, addressing the National Press Club, also said the Coalition would slash the National Construction Code from more than 2000 pages to “an 80 page basic Australian standard”.

Bragg said Australian Bureau of Statistics figures showed the NOM currently remaining above 300,000. The budget forecasts the NOM to decline to 225,000 in 2027-28.
