Pune Water Cut: No Tap Supply Every Thursday From 15 October. What Residents Need to Know

Pune's municipal water supply will be shut off across the city every Thursday, starting 15 October 2026. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) says the weekly shutdown is meant to stretch the city's water stock until next year's monsoon.

PMC will suspend water supply to the entire city one day a week, every Thursday. This is not a one-day maintenance shutdown. Officials describe it as part of a longer water management plan, and residents should expect recurring interruptions.

It follows a Maharashtra government order asking civic bodies to cut water use by 10% from 16 October. The state also asked them to prepare detailed water management plans and put drinking water first.

The state order points to El Niño. It says the weather pattern brought less rainfall this monsoon, and its effects are likely to continue next year.

The dams show the effect. Combined storage in the four Khadakwasla-chain dams (Khadakwasla, Panshet, Varasgaon and Temghar) was 26.22 TMC on 12 October, according to Business Standard.

That is lower than at the same time last year.

Times of India reported the dams held 26 TMC (89%) on Monday, against 29 TMC (99%) a year earlier.

The aim is to make the water last until 31 August 2027, when the next monsoon should refill the reservoirs. Additional Municipal Commissioner Pavneet Kaur said it was necessary to use available water judiciously and plan properly so that it lasts till August 31 next year" (as quoted by The Indian Express).

The Thursday shutdown applies citywide. This includes housing societies, shops and offices on PMC supply.

Municipal drinking water is banned for construction. Builders are advised to use treated wastewater from sewage treatment plants, or borewell or well water.
