A $725M mega-hotel breaks ground between LA and SF

It’s been almost a year since the Hard Rock Casino Tejon flung upon its doors at the base of the Grapevine to eager throngs of curious onlookers, weary travelers and those who simply couldn’t believe that the dusty flats 25 miles directly south of downtown Bakersfield could host a high-end casino.

Thus far, the overseers of the new Interstate 5 destination have but one regret: It’s too small.

“No,” Jeff Hook, chief operating officer of Hard Rock International, emphatically told SFGATE when asked whether they made the initial casino footprint big enough. “We knew that on the first day. I’ve never been in a casino that has 100% occupancy. We had every single one of those slots full.”

Hook chuckled a little when he recalled how a known social media casino influencer came out for the grand opening and wasn’t able to get a spot at one of the slots or premier table games. “She had to play baccarat,” he said.

The casino’s immediate success has presented a problem most businesses would kill for — too much demand. Some can be remedied with quick fixes, like expanding the casino payroll from 1,100 to around 1,500 employees, or increasing the number of slot machines within the casino’s four walls to accommodate all gamblers, influencers or no.

But there’s been one missing amenity that Hard Rock Tejon officials say they hear about over and over again. And now, starting Wednesday, a major move is going to remedy that.

The company is breaking ground on the property’s second phase: the hotel and convention center component.

The undertaking, once complete, will be historic for not just Kern County, but for the entire I-5 corridor between Los Angeles and San Francisco.

I-5 is the most heavily trafficked highway in the nation. And while stretches in Southern California can feature more than a half million vehicles per day, traffic thins north of the LA Basin, leaving Bay Area-bound drivers to settle into a long, flat, cartoon backdrop loop of farmland, industrial sites and the occasional cow.
