Mold revealed as cause of Bay Area library's abrupt closure

After suddenly shutting down the Sebastopol Regional Library last week with little explanation, officials announced in a Tuesday news release that an environmental investigation is underway due to mold found in the walls of the branch.

The library closed on Thursday after employees noticed peeling wallpaper and what appeared to be visible mold in the staff room and teen area, the city of Sebastopol and Sonoma County Library said in a joint statement. During an investigation the following day, when Servpro work crews were seen outside of the building, tests conducted in the wall cavities came back positive for “elevated mold spore levels,” officials said, though they were not airborne in the library’s common areas.
