In the early 1990s, my friend Trevor Suttor was a reporter with the Regina Leader-Post. One day he called to say he had approval to establish a column reflecting the Indigenous point of view and that he was contacting potential writers. He asked if he could throw my name into the hopper. Thirty-five years later, I’m still doing it.

At first, there were about six to eight of us. Gradually the number dwindled down. Some had a pet peeve and a couple of columns got those out of their system. Others had a good rant and burned out after a few months. I was the only one standing tall. So began a 34-year journey where a side hustle I took for walking around money became a defining career.
I realized the secret to longevity in the opinion section was to slowly work through a series of topics and educate the public. I used history, legends and teachings from our elders to explain issues in both a contemporary and historical context. The rich history of our land creates the foundation of the present.
