Reflections: Cecil Conrad Eidt, a significant Canadian agricultural geneticist

The Stratford native made substanital contributions to Canada's experimental farm system

The Eidt family has a long history in Stratford. While many members of the Eidt family have fascinating stories connected to them, two names that local history enthusiasts may be familiar with are Edward Henry Eidt and his son Cecil Conrad Eidt. This week, we are highlighting Cecil Conrad Eidt, a significant Canadian agricultural geneticist.

Cecil Conrad Eidt was born in Stratford on Dec. 9, 1899, to parents Dr. Edward Henry Eidt and Mary “Minnie” Eidt. At the time, the family was living at 76 William St. Cecil’s father, Edward, was a local dentist, politician, and was instrumental in the development of an 850-acre park system for Stratford. Having a father with a passion for horticulture may have influenced Cecil to become interested in the subject from a young age.

The family later lived at 271 Cambria St., where Dr. Edward Eidt planted dozens of plum trees on two lots he owned behind the home. He kept bee hives and chickens on his property as well;........
