WESS school parent council quiz night raises nearly $7,000

How many bones are there in the human body? What is the longest river in Africa? What country has a thousand lakes? What TV show is this theme song from (the song was then played)? Which country is closer to Africa – Italy or Spain?

The Parent School Council of West Elgin Secondary School held a quiz night and silent auction event at the Elgin International Club on March 27.

The occasion attracted a large crowd of supporters who strove their best to correctly answer the 100 questions posed by quiz master Bill Denning.

WESS principal Lyndsay Denning (yes, Bill’s sister-in-law) welcomed the assembled crowd and invited them to join in the fun of the evening, and thanked them earnestly on several occasions for their support of the school and its programs, staff and students.

Teams quavered and cackled in their quest to correctly answer the 100 queries, while the allowed time quickly, quantifiably flew by.

Undaunted, the winners’ scores were remarkably high, showcasing the expertise in West Elgin on trivial things.

The school parent council (SPC) is a little-known and under-appreciated element of both the elementary and secondary school systems.

This group, made up of parents and a few grandparents, serves to keep the principal well-informed about the community, its ongoing issues and the local chatter regarding the school.

Lyndsay Denning keeps the council informed about upcoming and current changes to the curriculum, the rebuilding and renewal at WESS and any issues pertinent to their role as parents.

Meetings of these people occur regularly throughout the year, and the council’s support for the school manifests itself in many ways.

This event was held to raise funds for a school-wide program coming to the school in May, called the Unplugged Team Building Day which will strive to build social and team building skills, in an enjoyable environment. One of its goals is to create a mindset in which both education and play can be freed from technology, including games and social media, and focus on human interactions.

Ninety-eight players participated in the quiz night, organized by five SPC volunteers, assisted by eight volunteer students.

Almost $7,000 was raised during the evening, a tribute to these volunteers’ hard work and inspiration, and the community spirit. The money raised goes entirely to the cause.

Individuals, service clubs and businesses contributed a total of 32 silent auction items. Prizes for the winning teams were, instead of cash prizes, pens with the WESS school logo. Thus, every penny brought in goes to the project.
