Gilberts: Another look at the birth of Chatham
Last week I told you about another chapter from Kentiana – Chapter 8, “The Birth of Chatham," a brief account written by Thomas Scullard.
Chapter 8 from Kentiana, The Birth of Chatham, written by Thomas Scullard, is a very brief account of Chatham’s early days.
The original paper was delivered in the first year of the Kent Historical Society’s existence. It’s part of Vo. 1 of the KHS Papers and Addresses. The preface says the Kent Historical Society’s establishment was facilitated by John Dearness, of London, who was the president of the Ontario Historical Society, and also by the Macaulay Club, a debating club that had been in existence in Chatham since the 1870s and which would continue to hold regular meetings until the 1980s, making it the longest lived debating club in Canada’s history.
