Remembering 9/11 - the day everything changed

This Friday marks the 25th anniversary of the day everything changed.

On Sept. 11, 2001, the world held its breath. Terrorists hijacked planes. Two were flown into the World Trade Centre towers in New York City. A third hit the Pentagon and a fourth crashed into a field in Pennsylvania.

The aftermath of those horrific events changed our everyday life, our views of the world and the rules of travel that continue to this day.

The late summer day dawned beautiful and sun-kissed. The sky was a dazzling blue, the air clean and clear.

I arrived early to work at the Brantford Expositor at about 8 a.m. as I often did, to get ready for the day, figure out who was in court, which courtroom I would attend and just relax at my desk with a coffee I bought on the way.

The TV was off. It was quiet. Only the newsroom clerk and I were in the office. Suddenly, our managing editor came rushing in – actually running – and........
