Why Toni Atkins’ exit from the California governor’s race is a bigger deal than it seems
Former Assembly Speaker and Senate President Toni Atkins announced Monday she was dropping out of the race to succeed Gavin Newsom as California governor.
Former Assembly Speaker and Senate President Pro Tem Toni Atkins, D-San Diego, was the gubernatorial candidate that many people in Sacramento thought was the most qualified candidate in the race and could have potentially been a breakout star.
On Monday, however, Atkins announced she is dropping out of the race.

“I’m stepping aside today as a candidate for governor,” Atkins wrote in a letter to her supporters. “Despite the strong support we’ve received and all we’ve achieved, there is simply no viable path forward to victory.”
