House Speaker Mike Johnson said Tuesday he hopes that any guardrails placed on artificial intelligence will be voluntary, as Congress faces pressure to establish a regulatory structure for the technology before lawmakers leave Washington later this week.

"I hope it's voluntary," Johnson told CNBC on "Squawk Box" Tuesday morning, before meeting with AI executives and President Donald Trump. "We'll find out what comes out of the meeting today. I think that that's where they're headed. I think they see the handwriting on the wall, and I think they want to ensure........
