I am writing to give my view on the high increase in the cost of owning a small business in recent years. This issue has been more prevalent than ever. Minimum wage has increased over 30 per cent in the last four years, food and ingredient costs have risen, and there have been additional labour laws.

As the front-of-house manager at a small cafe, I see firsthand how these issues create a suffocating environment as an owner. Increasing minimum wage forces employers to cut down on employees’ hours, causing less work. With higher food prices, many places have had to decrease their labour and increase their prices. There are also recent changes to the labour laws, which have made it difficult for employers to keep payroll costs down. I have had regulars tell me they are eating........
