As someone who recently engaged with my representatives on the topic of affordable housing and regulatory burdens, I felt compelled to write a response addressing the points raised by Anne Emery.

Recently on these pages, Emery urged Halifax to preserve our architectural heritage by discouraging new apartment construction on the peninsula and treating Victorian streetscapes primarily as a tourism attraction. While the affection for Halifax’s old houses is understandable, this prescription ignores the economic reality of preservation in a growing city.
