Professor Srebrnik seems to have very little regard for this country, for its fundamental distinctiveness, its struggles and its successes. National characteristics of which we Canadians are particularly proud appear to be summarily dismissed by him.
“How many countries elsewhere in the world have had the luxury of endless squabbling over bilingualism, identity, immigration, provincial-federal issues, relations with Indigenous peoples, and so forth.”
Elsewhere in his article, he goes on to claim that “…Canada’s inherent French-English divide absorbs unending federal resources.”
His derisive use of the term, “squabbling” suggests a disdain for talking through problems, for seeking common ground. Better, one assumes, to adopt the strong-arm tactics that have proven so successful elsewhere. And his fixation on........
