COMMENTARY:  It’s long past time for the media ecosystem to ditch the Indigenous stereotypes

I enjoyed going through the book, Decolonizing Journalism, by celebrated Anishinaabe and award-winning journalist Duncan McCue. It’s really more of a “how-to” guide for those in the journalism space to enhance their news coverage of Indigenous Peoples, to understand the do’s and don’ts of Indigenous reportage, and to better serve Indigenous communities overall.

Justice Murray Sinclair also wrote about this in his 2015 Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s final report and its 94 “calls to action.” It highlighted the critical role of the news media in perpetuating Indigenous inequities in Canada, fostering division and conflict through ignorance and misinformation, and entrenching damaging thoughts and attitudes about Indigenous peoples.

“We call upon Canadian journalism programs and media schools to require education for all students on the history of Aboriginal peoples, including the history and legacy of residential schools, the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, Treaties and Aboriginal rights, Indigenous law, and Aboriginal-Crown relations,” the report states.
