ANDY WALKER: Living Labs program deserves better fate

A program founded in P.E.I. that later became a national success story is now in danger of disappearing.

The Living Labs program was spearheaded by the East Prince Agri-Environmental Association, a groundbreaking organization formed by a handful of potato growers that has sought to develop best management practices for the industry that improve both the environment and the bottom line of producers.

They helped to sell the federal government on the concept of co-operation between industry, government researchers at both the federal and provincial levels and the academic community. It began in 2018 as a partnership between the association and 14 other organizations, including governments, four universities and environmental groups.

By the time it was renewed in 2023, it was viewed as the template for a national program. Living Labs partnerships had been established in a number of provinces. The Island project was working on several projects, ranging from the addition of kelp to the diet of........
