His name was in the mix this time last year when Robert Mitchell made what turned out to be an unsuccessful political comeback. The former cabinet minister in the Wade MacLauchlan government resigned earlier this summer after two failed attempts to regain a seat in the legislature.

At that, the one-term mayor took a pass, saying there were still things he wanted to accomplish as the top elected official in the province’s second largest community. This time around, he found himself the target of an extensive lobbying campaign by many within the party who feel he has what it takes to lead the Liberals back to power.

Since the leadership convention will be held on Oct. 25 and the municipal election is set for Nov. 2, he had to make a choice. While there is no such thing in politics as a sure thing, he was the clear favourite........
