A Walk in the Woods: Growing forests carbon credit program taking off

Several years ago, a like-minded group of Nova Scotians who shared an interest in the future of Nova Scotia forests came together to see if there was a way to make use of carbon credits to better manage private woodlots.

After years of work developing the organization, known as Growing Forestlands Inc. (Growing Forests), the new business model uses community investment to preserve private forests and fight climate change. Its main objectives are to reduce clearcutting in Nova Scotia and monetize the ecological value of standing timber that is well managed over time to off-set carbon emissions.

Growing Forests established a Community Economic Development Investment Fund (CEDIF) to encourage average people with an interest to get involved in affordable investment. For those people interested in having some ownership of woodland for environmental reasons, but either cannot afford the cost, or have no way of managing the property, it provides a unique opportunity. It also provides handsome tax credits. All investors are part owners of the mature forest properties that are purchased with the proceeds from the investments.
