Peterborough Symphony Orchestra opens 60th anniversary with double milestone celebration
The Peterborough Symphony Orchestra (PSO) returns to the stage on Saturday, Oct. 24 for the opening concert of the 2026-27 season, and will be celebrating two important milestones. The upcoming season is both the 60th anniversary of the PSO and Michael Newnham’s 25th year as music director and conductor.
The PSO presents five shows this season, beginning with Strength Sparkle on Saturday, Oct. 24 at 7:30 p.m. at Showplace Performance Centre, 290 George St. The evening features Mendelssohn’s enchanting Midsummer Nights Dream Overture, Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No. 1, with violinist Erika Raum, and Beethoven’s Eroica Symphony. There is an opportunity to meet Newnham at the Meet the Maestro Pre-Concert Talk at 6:45 p.m.
Light In the Winter Night, the PSO’s annual holiday concert takes place on Dec. 19. On Feb. 20, the PSO presents Symphonic Galaxy: The Music of John Williams. With the return of spring, Paris in Bloom will bring orchestral images of the City of Lights to Peterborough, on April 4. Odyssey of Brilliance: The PSO’s Diamond Jubilee, is the season finale and gala concert, taking place May 15.
The PSO was founded in 1967 by music director and conductor Klement Hambourg, along with members of the pre-existing Peterborough Chamber Orchestra. It is a non-profit charity, located in downtown Peterborough, committed to serving our community through high quality orchestral performances, education and engagement.
