Laura Taler’s films showcase emigration themes at Art Gallery of Peterborough

Public Energy Performing Arts presents “The Village Trilogy” and “Matryoshka Crush,” two films by Laura Taler, on Friday March 27 at 7 p.m., at the Art Gallery of Peterborough.

The screening celebrates 30 years since the acclaimed debut of “The Village Trilogy,” a dance film that alludes to the millions of people uprooted through emigration in the past century. It captures a time and place that is beyond our grasp, but not beyond our memory.

It is paired with “Matryoshka Crush,” Taler’s newest film, in which poison, exorcism, gender trouble, song, and dance intermingle in a darkly funny and disturbing tale of intense yearning.

Taler is a Romanian-born Canadian artist who began her career as a contemporary dance choreographer before turning her attention to filmmaking and visual art.

Her work explores how memory and history are linked to movement, and how the body is able to carry the past without being oppressed by it.

Tickets are available on a sliding scale from $10 to $20. The Art Gallery of Peterborough is located at 250 Crescent St.

Taler will also present a master-class on Saturday March 28, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Theatre on King, 171 King St. The class will explore how Taler’s practice has evolved over the years and will include in-depth discussions about the process of planning a shoot, and practical tools and tactics to communicate ideas to others.

The cost of the workshop is $10 per person.
