Quilters’ guild serves up grants for school breakfast clubs
EDITOR’S NOTE: In last week’s Buckhorn column, the headline incorrectly stated a new Lakehurst Hall is being built. In fact, a new hall is not being constructed; work is being done outside the existing building to create new features for the public.
Breakfast clubs are an important part of school life. In many schools, children get off the bus and are able to get something to eat to fill their tummies after that bus ride.
At Buckhorn Public School, children are able to eat from 8:20 to 8:55 a.m. Volunteers have organized the food for the day — cereals, fruits, vegetables, muffins, granola bars and yogurt.
At Warsaw school, each classroom has its own bin filled with baked goods such as muffins and squares, cheese and yogurt, making sure all dietary needs are met. This bin is out all day for children to access.
All of this takes money. As a result of the quilt show held last September, the Buckhorn Area Quilters’ Guild had $10,000 to donate among seven different schools — Buckhorn, Warsaw, Apsley, Curve Lake, Chemong, Lakefield District and St. Paul’s — and one organization, Days for Girls. Representatives were recently at Lakehurst Hall, where the guild met and made the presentation.
Days for Girls is an organization that provides menstrual supplies for girls in countries worldwide. A local group is part of this effort. More information will be available on this effort in a later column.
Trent Lakes’ Annual Ratepayers and Community Association Meeting
The Municipality of Trent Lakes will be having its annual Ratepayers and Community Association meeting on April 25 at 10 a.m.
It is an opportunity for the public to voice their ideas, comments or concerns to members of council. The meeting is open to the public at the council chambers, 760 Peterborough County Road 36. No advanced registration is required.
The public is asked to arrive in the council chambers at least five minutes before the meeting.
Those who attend virtually will have equal opportunity to provide comments or questions. Check the municipal website at trentlakes.ca for the link. Ensure you have a working microphone to take part.
There was a great birthday celebration recently for Buckhorn Community Centre longtime volunteer Diane Skinner. Diane has been behind the scenes and on the scene organizing many things that have happened at the centre.
To make this a surprise, manager Judy McWhirter emailed the many volunteers telling of the celebration without Diane’s knowledge. At the celebration, Judy sang her praises. She called her the face of the craft shows, art festival and dinner theatre. She is the first person many people meet when entering the BCC for many of the activities.
For 26 years, Diane has been the friendly face and voice that made the calls for volunteers and made sure everyone was fed and watered. Not only the BCC thanks you, but the community. Happy birthday!
Another event at the BCC important to the functioning of the organization is the annual meeting. President Margaret Roberts and vice-president Steve Connolly have announced the annual general meeting will be held Wednesday, April 29 at 7 p.m. Please RSVP to Judy McWhirter at generalmgr@buckhorncommunitycentre.com or 705-657-8833 if you plan to attend. Attendees must be current members of the BCC.
