Lakefield Horticultural Society presents “Exploring Canada’s Wild: Adam Shoalts” on April 14 at 7 p.m. at Lakefield College.

Adam Shoalts, a professional explorer and bestselling author, will discuss some of his many expeditions across Canada’s wilderness, including his 4,000-kilometre solo journey across Canada’s Arctic, and his 3,400-km journey by canoe from Lake Erie to the Arctic.

He will also speak about, among other topics, the plants and wild mushrooms he eats during his travels.

Shoalts has been named one of the greatest living explorers by Canadian Geographic, and “Canada’s Indiana Jones” by the Toronto Star.

Tickets for members cost $15, and $25 for nonmembers. They are available for cash only at The Advant Garden Shop, 165 Sherbrooke St., at Wild Rock, 169 Charlotte St., and at Happenstance Books and Yarns, 44 Queen St., Lakefield.

To purchase e-tickets, email the society’s treasurer, Ceci Leigh at lhstreasurer22@gmail.com.

Trent Radio Fundrai$io

Trent Radio Fundrai$io, Trent Radio’s annual fundraising and community building initiative takes place April 12-18. It is a week-long event to celebrate the Trent Radio community, programmers, programming and the power and potential of radio.

Events include special programming; a 50/50 draw; and community events, including a Fundrai$io Radio Cabaret Friday, April 17 at The Theatre on King, and others to be announced.

Tickets for the 50/50 draw are on sale until Saturday, April 18, with the draw taking place on air that day at the end of the radio marathon. All proceeds go to support producer-orientated broadcasting at Trent Radio House, providing the opportunity for students and community members to take to the airwaves and learn about broadcasting.

Tickets cost $100 for 50 tickets, $25 for 10, $10 for 3, or $5 for one and are available by visiting rafflebox.ca/raffle/trent-radio.

Trent Radio Fundrai$io is also a good time to make a charitable contribution. Charitable tax receipts will be issued for donations.

Trent Radio, a not-for-profit registered charity, is commercial free with a focus on producer oriented programming. It is sponsored by the students of Trent University through the Levy System, and shared with the community as a whole.

YES Shelter for Youth and Families feeds 30 people three meals a day, 365 days a year on a budget that is roughly what two families of four spend on groceries in a year. They do it with help from community partners and community members.

Right now, YES is looking for donations of grocery gift cards to cover protein for shelter meals. Receiving gift cards means they do not have to worry about storage of donated items as space is limited, and staff can pursue the best grocery store deals.

Gift cards from any store and for any amount would be appreciated. Cards can be dropped off at the shelter, located at 196 Brock St.

The Great Peterborough Clothing Swap, part of the RE:Connect (Spring Edition) event, happens Wednesday, April 15 from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. at the Morrow Building, Peterborough Memorial Centre.

The event is free and open to everyone in the community.
Bring gently-used clothing and/or bedding and swap for something new-to-you.

Bring as many items as you want and take as many as you want. Items must be clean, in good condition with no rips, holes, broken zippers, or missing buttons. If you wouldn’t give it to a friend, it shouldn’t come to the swap.

Any items left after the event will be donated to the Salvation Army Thrift Store. Please bag bedding and linens separately ready for donation to Salvation Army, as they will likely bypass the clothing swap.
