Next Gen raises $20K to help youth access Five Counties services
The recent Next Gen Game with the Peterborough Petes raised $20,134 for Five Counties Children’s Centre, an all-time high for the Next Gen Game event.
The funds go toward the Building Abilities for Life campaign to help children and youth access essential services like occupational, speech and language, and physical therapies.
“The Next Gen Game truly showcases the very best of our community,” said Scott Pepin, CEO, Five Counties.
“The Petes and their fans always show up for local kids, and seeing our clients step into meaningful roles while the crowd cheered them on was incredibly inspiring. Knowing that this unforgettable experience also raises crucial funds for children’s services makes the impact even more meaningful for families across our region who are waiting for life‑changing support.”
The Next Gen Game, a sellout held on Family Day, was a day of family fun, including a free family skate, face painting, giant Lego, a silent auction and Chuck-A-Pep. Custom T‑shirts, designed by Five Counties’ client Jadyn and featuring Roger the Pete’s mascot, were also unveiled.
Several Five Counties clients participated in game-day activities. Bryor and Brielle, along with their family, participated in the ceremonial pre-game puck drop. Nate, Mason, Kaisyn and William signed one‑day contracts with the Petes and filled key game-day roles, including general manager, coach, PA announcer, and scout.
They participated in behind‑the‑scenes duties, met the team, and enjoyed other once‑in‑a‑lifetime experiences at the game.
“You could feel the kids’ joy throughout the arena,” said Pepin. “The Petes create a remarkable Next Gen Game experience, and that was on display again at this year’s game.”
Five Counties would like to extend a sincere thanks to the sponsors who made the 2026 Next Gen Game possible: Waste Connections of Canada, Peterborough; Tim Hortons, Pinchin Ltd.; Lindsay-Peterborough Movers & Storage; Bellwether Family Wealth, Weichel & Associates; LLF Lawyers; All Weather Directional Drilling; Unity Design Studio; and Canadian Tire, both Peterborough North and Lansdowne.
Vinnies is reporting that donations are low. So, if you are doing spring cleaning or sorting out clothing, consider donating your unwanted and gently-used items. Donations support the local Food Pantry and families in need in our community.
Donations of clothing, household items, decor, and bedding are accepted at all three Vinnies locations. And when you make a donation, you can ask for a $5 off coupon to use on your own purchases.
Vinnies locations are 799 Erskine Ave., 52 Hunter St. E., and 144 Queen St., Lakefield. For further information, call 705-742-2585.
Community Care is looking for volunteers. The agency has a wait-list for clients within the City of Peterborough who want to maintain their independence, but just require support getting groceries as they are unable to do so themselves.
What is involved with this volunteer position? You connect with the clients and confirm their order (if needed), then shop or pick up the required groceries and deliver them to the client’s home, while offering a few moments of kindness along the way.
The time involved is two shifts a month, with flexible scheduling. Other requirements are a valid driver’s licence, a reliable vehicle and a compassionate heart. Orientation, training and support is provided.
If you think this is a good match and you would like to volunteer, email your name and contact information to adunkley@commcareptbo.org.
Because no one should have to choose between independence and groceries.
