Folk ballads the topic of upcoming Trent Valley Archives AGM
Trent Valley Archives invites the community to its AGM to see and hear musician and music scholar Dr. Allan Kirby. Kirby will perform and discuss early folk ballads, and talk about their arrival from Ireland and other old countries and how they were adapted once they arrived here.
This free presentation takes place Thursday, April 23 at 7 p.m. at Highland Park Cemetery Visitor Centre, located at 2510 Bensfort Rd.
“These unique songs and tunes generated interest from musicologist Charles Louis Seeger Jr. (Pete Seeger’s father) a professor at Harvard. Subsequently, audio recordings were made by noted Canadian folklorist Edith Folke at P.G. Towns’ General Store in Douro, and throughout Peterborough County from 1956 to 1964. Dr. Kirby wrote his PhD thesis at Carleton University on the subject,” reads a press release for the event.
The presentation is open to the public, but the AGM portion of the evening is only open to Trent Valley Archives members. Light refreshment will be provided.
Pre-registration is not required, but by registering you will help organizers determine the numbers attending. To register visit eventbrite.ca/e/annual-general-meeting.

The Tim Hortons Smile Cookie Campaign returns April 27 until May 3, and this time the proceeds will support the Peterborough Humane Society and Five Counties Children’s Centre. Eighteen Tim Hortons locations across Peterborough, Bridgenorth, Lakefield and Curve Lake will participate
“We are very grateful to the Tim Hortons locations in Peterborough and the surrounding area for selecting Five Counties and the Peterborough Humane Society as this year’s Smile Cookie beneficiaries,” said Scott Pepin, CEO, Five Counties Children’s Centre.
“Support from this campaign will help ensure important services are available in our community at Five Counties to support children with physical, developmental and communication needs and at the Peterborough Humane Society to help animals in need of care in our community.”
Every Smile Cookie purchased will help make a difference. Bulk orders can also be placed by completing an online order form and dropping it off at a local Tims.
“We are incredibly grateful and excited to be included in this wonderful campaign alongside our friends at Five Counties,” said Shawn Morey, CEO of the Peterborough Humane Society. “By supporting this campaign, you are helping ensure animals that come into our care receive the support they need, while they wait to join their new forever homes, and supporting the great work that Five Counties does for children.”
Throughout the campaign, volunteers from the Peterborough Humane Society and Five Counties will be on site in the restaurants decorating cookies, greeting guests, and thanking supporters.
