Some articles do more than inform. They challenge assumptions, expose uncomfortable truths and stay with us – which is why independent journalism needs room to publish them.

When sifting through the hundreds of possible pieces for P&I each week, a few always stand out.

I have been trying to work out what it is that makes them stay with me.

We apply the same criteria to all we consider: does the article advance debate? Is it newsworthy or relevant? Is it well written and dynamic? Does it bring a depth and context to an issue that others lack? Does it fill a gap – covering issues the mainstream shirk? All of _P&I’_s articles qualify in one of these categories, and, due to the richness of our growing author group,........
