Pakistan commenced a new initiative on 10 July, aimed at identifying, detaining, and deporting Afghans lacking valid visas, as migrants in Islamabad observed a rise in police checkpoints and heightened scrutiny of documents. This enforcement initiative follows a directive from Pakistan’s Interior Ministry issued over a week ago to provincial governments, special administrative regions, and authorities in the Islamabad Capital Territory. The instruction urged local officials to expedite the identification, detention, and deportation of Afghans without appropriate visas.

The implementation of this measure has raised concerns among Afghans residing in Pakistan, including refugees and asylum seekers, who express fears of arrest and involuntary repatriation to Afghanistan. According to statistics mentioned by Pakistan’s Interior Ministry and the United Nations refugee agency, over 1.1 million Afghans have returned from Pakistan since the onset of 2025. United Nations figures also show that nearly 2.4 million Afghans returned from Pakistan between September 2023 and the end of May 2026.
