Top 100 Oilers: No. 19 — Shawn Horcoff

Oilersnation is reviving the Top 100 Edmonton Oilers of All Time list, a project originally created by the late Robin Brownlee in 2015. Shawn Horcoff comes in at No. 19 on our updated 2025 list. He was ranked No. 29 on Brownlee’s original list.

Shawn Horcoff’s fate in Edmonton was sealed when he signed a six-year, $33-million contract in 2008. The contract would take up just under 10 per cent of a $56.7-million salary cap in a day when NHL players were paid paltry in comparison to today.

He was fresh off an All-Star appearance when the deal was signed, and while those first two years were good, it wouldn’t take the fanbase long to turn against him, leading to a tough final few seasons as the Decade of Darkness hit its lowest points.

Notable

Horcoff carried a heavy load for the Oilers, especially in five of the six years he played on that big-ticket deal, and maybe now it’s something the fan base can look back on in a better light.
