Five takeaways from the Oilers’ 2026 training camp
Training camp has wrapped up, all the pre-season games have been played, and the Edmonton Oilers finished with a perfect 4-0 record in the exhibition games.
The Oilers played with pace, got solid goaltending, and, for the most part, looked like a team that was buying into the system that head coach Mike Babcock is trying to implement. With that in mind, with the pre-season now in the books, here are five takeaways from training camp.
Jarry and Levi both had excellent camps
The Oilers have a very good problem in the crease coming out of training camp, with both Tristan Jarry and Devon Levi playing very well in their respective outings. The problem now is figuring out who gets the bulk of the starts.
Both netminders played in two games apiece, with Jarry posting a .952 save percentage (SV%) and a 1.23 goals-against average (GAA), while Levi posted a .946 SV% and a 1.20 GAA. Also, both netminders seemed to be confident handling the puck, with Jarry trying to score a goal on an empty net against the Vancouver Canucks on Sept. 24, and he might have, had Elias Pettersson not knocked it down.
Levi showed off his ‘Mike Smith-esque’ puck-handling skills throughout camp as well, with no better example than against the Winnipeg Jets, when he launched an 80-foot pass to Kasperi Kapanen that created a scoring chance.
Early signs point to some healthy competition in net this season, something Levi is prepared for, saying, “I’m definitely ready. I think it’ll be a healthy competition too,” he said. “Jarry’s a great guy. We’ve had some good conversations. We don’t really look at it as like who’s going to take it from one another – it’s about who can help the team.”
That said, if I had my pick of who should start opening night, I’d go with Levi, who’s coming off a great game against the Calgary Flames, stopping 23 of 24 pucks. However, Bob Stauffer posted that it will be Jarry, according to Babcock.
Owen Michaels has been a pleasant surprise
Raise your hand if you thought Owen Michaels would still be up with the Oilers after all the exhibition games had been played.
Yeah, I don’t see many hands raised.
I don’t think even the head coach thought so, either, with Mike Babcock saying, “He wasn’t........
