It was a busy Canada Day for most National Hockey League teams.

The Edmonton Oilers, in particular, had a busy day. Their day started slow, but the ball began to roll once they were able to trade Darnell Nurse. Moving out his entire $9.25 million cap hit, the Oilers replaced him with Ryan Shea, while also adding Frederik Andersen and Mathieu Joseph to one-year deals.

Around the league, there were 16 former Oilers who signed the dotted line on July 1st, including two players who re-signed with the Oilers.

Which former Oilers re-signed with the team on July 1?

Of the two, Kasperi Kapanen was the most noticeable. Signing to a one-year, $2.6 million cap hit, Kapanen missed half of the 2025-26 season due to injury, but was productive when healthy. In 41 games, the right winger scored eight goals and 17 points, up from his six goals and 14 points in 67 games last season. Kapanen also happened to be one of the best Oilers’ in the short playoff run, scoring four goals and six points in six games.

Max Jones missed the postseason due to an injury, splitting his 2025-26 season between the American Hockey League and the NHL. The Oilers were better with him in the lineup, hitting everything he saw. Over 21 NHL games, Jones scored three goals and five points, earning him a one-year deal with an $850,000 cap hit.

Where did Jack Roslovic and Calvin Pickard sign in free agency?

The biggest notable loss of last year’s roster is Jack Roslovic, who signed with the Toronto Maple Leafs on a two-year deal that carries a cap hit of $4 million. Signing early into the 2025-26 season, Roslovic scored 21 goals and 36 points in 69 games........
