Oilersnation is reviving the Top 100 Edmonton Oilers of All Time list, a project originally created by the late Robin Brownlee in 2015. Lee Fogolin comes in at No. 23 on our updated 2025 list. He was ranked No. 19 on Brownlee’s original list. 

Lee Fogolin was basically an old man when the Edmonton Oilers won the Stanley Cup in 1984.

In actual fact, he was just 28 years old, a veteran of 10 seasons in the NHL at that point. But compared to the youth on the first Oilers championship team — he was a grizzled veteran.

Fogolin lifted the Cup twice for Edmonton in 1984 and 1985, a key figure on the Oilers blueline that graduated from the wild west of the WHA to one of the greatest hockey dynasties of all time. 

He was the third captain in the team’s NHL franchise history, but is best remembered today for voluntarily handing off the “C” to Wayne Gretzky in 1983. Over the years, it’s his leadership that is best remembered by those legends of yesteryear. 

“We were young guys having a bunch of fun, because we were having success on the ice,” Kevin Lowe recalled at the Oilers Hall of Fame induction ceremony for Fogolin in 2022.

“But I remember, from time to time, he’d pull me aside and say, ‘Hey, listen. It’s great to have fun, but you’ve gotta remember you got a job to do.’ You know, when you get it from a guy like Lee Fogolin, it’s like, ‘OK, I’ve got it.’”

Lee Fogolin was a sought after prospect in the mid-1970s, drafted 11th overall in the 1974 NHL Draft to the Buffalo Sabres. His dad was a hockey player too, playing in the Original Six era as a member of the Detroit Red Wings and Chicago Blackhawks.
