Readers sound off on standing up for Jews, co-op residents and Dems’ spending
Appeasing Israel’s critics wins no allies
Manhattan: Re “Jewish New Yorkers and Zionism’s future” (op-ed, Oct. 26): Ben Krull argues that it’s a mistake for Jewish organizations to take to task politicians who denounce Israel as a Jewish state and feign objectivity concerning Jews and their safety. He contends that Jews shouldn’t protest too much or further alienate anti-Israel politicians or cause other politicians to join their ranks.
That “sha-shtill” (loosely translated Yiddish for don’t create a fuss) approach is precisely the wrong way to stand up for Jewish safety at home and Jewish sovereignty in our ancestral homeland. That laissez-faire attitude by “politically correct Jews” during the Second World War is why FDR placed the rescue of European Jews facing Nazi slaughter on the back burner without fearing adverse political consequences. The country, especially in the heartland, was largely antisemitic or entirely uncaring about minorities. Today, a rising class of bigoted politicians has falsified the meaning of Zionism, denied the right of the Jewish state to exist and given aid and comfort to pro-jihadist, antisemitic mobs that have attacked Jewish citizens and vandalized synagogues and Jewish institutions since the Oct. 7 massacres.
When it comes to Jewish safety and rights, a mealy-mouthed acquiescence will not gain us any friends among those who preach falsehoods about Israel and who prefer to ignore or, in increasing numbers, even promote the obscene antisemitic accusation that we are “baby killers” and promote “genocide.”
