A good neighbor knows when to intervene

Kearny, N.J.: In the tragic death of Nathaly Ramirez, who was pushed off a 15th-floor balcony with her 8-month-old baby in her arms by her violent ex-boyfriend, we find yet another case of neighbors who heard the yelling and pleading leading up to the tragedy and did absolutely nothing to prevent it from escalating.

The neighbor above her apartment apparently heard each word and saw them out on the balcony at 3:30 in the morning and thought it was sufficient to, in her own words, “just (say) a prayer and (go) to sleep.” Has she never heard that “faith without works is dead” (James 2:26)? She could’ve called 911, she could’ve yelled out the window and told the perpetrator the police were on their way, but no — she said a prayer (probably believing herself to be a good person for doing so) and “went to sleep.”

We see this in too many cases where someone winds up dead, particularly in apartment buildings. It’s as if no one’s ever heard “See (or hear) something, say something.” A young mother is dead, her baby hospitalized, and her family, friends and community in mourning, and no one in a position to prevent it did anything to try to stop it all from happening. Those neighbors should hang their heads in shame.

Premature politicking

Whitestone: Who in the world does Darializa Avila Chevalier think she is? She’s a candidate at this time and she is demanding the removal of the police commissioner. What in God’s name does she know about policing, safety or anything else regarding the operations of New York City?
