Greene: Sherri Shepherd to play Genie in Broadway’s ‘Aladdin.’ Was Michelle Obama busy?
There’s no law that says a genie can’t be a woman, just like there’s no law that says a Disney mermaid can’t be Black.
For years, the entertainment industry’s biggest genie star was a woman, TV’s Barbara Eden, who played a sitcom genie in a bottle — albeit, a scantily clad one — in the hit series “I Dream of Jeannie.”
So, the problem isn’t that a woman was cast as Genie for the first time in Disney’s long-running Broadway hit “Aladdin,” or in any of the 11 Disney-produced productions of the show around the world.
The issue is with the woman who was cast.
Starting next month, Sherri Shepherd, a former co-host of “The View,” who took over Wendy Williams’ daytime talk show, will play the role popularized by the late Robin Williams in the 1992 animated movie.
Shepherd’s turn as the Genie is the latest example of Broadway watering down its product with celebrity casting stunts.
I guess........
